Family Collaboration: $10 Cedar Hope Chest Restoration

Six weeks ago, I found this beat up chest at an estate sale. It needed WORK. Take a look...

Amazingly, the inside is pristine!! Like it's never been used...Lane.Cedar.Chest. For real.

The before picture was taken without the top, because if you can imagine, the top was even worse than the body. Of course I gave the top to my father-in-law to see if it could be repaired enough to stain the top. He took it home, but said "No promises...it's in rough shape".

Because of the veneer issues on the base, the body had to be painted. I decided that with the size of this piece, if it turned out how I wanted it to, it would sit at the end of our bed to replace a clunky, leather bench we'd had awhile.

My father-in-law worked his magic!! Check it out!

Here it is in our bedroom! I plan on getting new bedding and decor to bring in a more rustic look based on this chest.

I'm so excited about this one...probably because I get to keep it. Although, as I'm writing this, I'm wondering if it doesn't need an applique on the front?! Thoughts?

  3. This looks great - I love cedar. We just inherited an upright cedar closet (cedar inside & out). It's sitting in the garage awaiting a door repair and facelift. Can't wait until I have the time (your post inspired me). Just became your newest follower.

  8. I have a dresser that is missing a big chunk of veneer, I know that I want to paint it but don't know how to fix it. Did you just use a wood filler to fix the areas missing the veneer? The chest turned out beautiful!

  9. This turned out great what a neat addition to your room. I wouldn't add anything until you are a little bored with it in a few years. Love your site.

  10. Be sure to go to the Lane site and order your new lock based o the serial number. They will replace it free, this is because of problems with the old locks and children being trapped in the chests.

  11. Allison! You've inspired me! We have my grandparent's hope chest in the guest room in the basement. It has a few nicks/scrathes, but nothing big. I'd love to move the piece to our bedroom but I have never re-finished furnture before! Where do I start? I love the gray...we have gray walls and dark brown furniture. What might you suggest? And where do I start?!?!

Love checking out your blog...you do great work!
