Antique Secretary and Hutch for a Fundraiser

Hellooooo??
Friends, it has been too long! I have been completing projects...refinishing old doors to become desks, making old closet doors into room dividers...but nothing really blog worthy. But this one is and I am excited to be back!

Back in April, I donated my time to refinish 2 pieces for our preschool fundraiser. I'd never done this before and didn't know exactly how it'd work out...I was questioning whether or not someone would even want to bid at all. There were 2 certificates...one for a large piece of the bidders choosing (dining table, dresser, etc) and one for a small piece (end table, chair, etc).

The winner of the large piece brought me this beautiful secretary and hutch in early September:



This piece will be put in the owner's Cape Cod home and she already had a plan...complete with colors picked out! Linen White and Appalachian Trail (both by BM). It is lightly distressed and we decided glass pulls would be best for this little beauty. Here she is...ready for her east coast debeut!







I still have a few tweaks to do before she's totally finished, but I hadn't written in sooo long, I had to share it tonight. Thanks for hanging in with me!

If you haven't heard, Julia at 551 East Furniture Design is hosting an AMAZING link party this month. It's called Habitat Heroes and the idea is to get peeps like us to restore a piece for charity. I know what you're thinking...it takes time and $$ to restore a piece. But it's one piece and think what a $4.00 can of spray paint can do for a little side table that you got for $5.00 at a garage sale? You donate that to Goodwill and they sell it for $20? That's a profit for them and only $9.00 for you. Aren't I good at math? ;)

Scotch Blue WINNERS!

Scotch Blue Painting Party with a Striped Table and Giveaway!

I picked this former sewing table up last weekend for $5.99. It had already been gutted! Score! Most of these sewing tables I see at thrift shops have such great lines!! The size of this table is perfect for an entry table.


I sanded it down, primed it with black primer (another genius product) and sprayed it Rustoleum Canyon Black in satin. Then the fun began. I measured off stripes starting at the middle of the table and working out. Each one is 3 inches wide (2 pieces of tape).


I used BM Linen White with a roller over the tape...I did 3 coats because I needed to cover the black. I was really excited to take the tape off and when I did...yowza! PERFECT stripes! Honestly, I'd used other painters tape before, and always got bleeding underneath. Not with Scotch Blue edge-lock paint protector tape!



There was one side of one stripe that bled a little, but I think it was user error.


The next day, I distressed a bit and then glazed...and I love her now!

Vanity Stool Redo and Gray Paint Info

This little stool isn't really worthy of it's own blog post, but I can't leave you with out pictures. I picked this up for $2 at an estate sale. I didn't get a before picture, but imagine really aged and dingy brass...not in a good way.

I'd picked up Rustoleum Sweet Pea in hopes of doing something pink...and this was my chance. Here she is today!



Now, on to what so many people have asked about. The gray painted table I posted here got a fantastic response and lots of questions about the color. I have the numbers on the can, but apparently it's just for Ben Moore paint. I took it to the hardware store to have them give me the closest color in the Ben Moore color deck. I got a few that were close, but not close enough. I remember the paint originated with a can of oops Ralph Lauren paint...so you know what I did for you guys? I drove to the only place that carries RL paint in the area, and...I didn't find the exact color. So here's what we're gonna do. I found a Hirschfields color that is nearly exact. The one I used is about 25% lighter. It's called Smokescreen (#0556).

I'm going to list the numbers/info for the paint here below. If it makes no sense to you or the guy at your hardware, HD or Lowes, I will send you a color swatch! Just email me and send me a self addressed and stamped envelope, and I'll send you a swatch of this mystery paint...that's how much I love the color and my followers/friends!

I bought a quart of latex enamel in Ace Hardware brand.
Deep base
Incandescent
B: 2 ounces, 1 shot, 1 half shot
F: 10 shots, 1 half shot
T: 10 shots, 1 half shot

This is a foreign language to me, but that's what the label says!
