Here is after I pryed those rails off...still not sure what purpose they served.
I asked my father-in-law to cut me a seat...and again he went above and beyond. Perfectly measured with the perfect hardware to attach the seat once I upholstered it.
I cut foam to fit the seat and put batting over it
I painted the base an oops grayish blue that I found at HD for $1.
I then distressed the bench and glazed it with provencial stain and attached the seat.
Now, before you get the "after" pics, I must tell you that this table made me cry AND almost killed me. Getting the seat on wasn't easy...and I was pretty frustrated, hence the tears. The only way I could get the seat attached with the holes lined up, was to lay underneath this table (now bench). I would look for the light green foam so I knew the holes were lining up. Picture me in my PJ's laying under this table...screwdriver in one hand, screws in the other...sliding the seat around to match up the holes. Several pieces of dust/debris fell into my eyes while doing this...and then it happened. I thought the first screw was screwed in solid but when I let go to say "no" to my 18 month old who thought it was fun to try bouncing on my stomach while the top half of me was under the table, I opened my mouth to say "NO" and the screw FELL IN MY MOUTH. Not lying..I couldn't make this up if I tried.
Anyway, after reading that story, you all deserve some after pics. Here is the new bench>

It doesn't fit in with my bedroom, but it would be a super cute bench at the end of a bed. And yes, on the right is the dog's rear end.

Allison so absolutely gorgeous (minus the rails of course). The red & white fabric is perfectly offset by the blue paint. So weird but I just finished a blue bench and took pics with a red & white quilt on it - post going up tomorrow. So spooky us bloggers start thinking alike.

First, G-Dub. My friend hated his old supervisor and he called her C-Dub. She was really old and scooted when she walked, sometimes she would stand in his doorway of his office but wouldn't say anything. He was always IMing me complaining about her.
Second, the handles, I imagined carrying this huge table around like a tray!!! I know, I'm a dork. LOL
And that screw falling in your mouth....I saw it coming before you even said it....'cause that is what would happen to me. :)

Oh Allison, I'm so glad you are Ok! Imagine if you swallowed the screw. Then you would have had a trip to the ER and that's never fun! But seriously, the bench is adorable. I love that fabric. And the red and blue together look really fresh. Great job! And again, you got a good story out of it!

Love it! The paint is great and looks awesome with the fabric. Did you use foam for the cushion? I have a bench I need to redo and not sure of the "logistics"

i am glad you are safe! i can only imagine how tragic and embarassing it would have been to be found dead with a screw lodged in your throat laying under the table in your pjs. not a pretty picture. but the table/bench- now that is a pretty picture.
Your bench turned our beautifully! So glad you didn't swallow the screw. All of your hard work and frustration paid off because it looks amazing. I like the fabric you chose, too.

you're lucky you didn't swallow it, right? yeah, try explaining that one to the emergency room doctors. "honestly doc, i was on my back trying to screw a seat to a bench and i swallowed the screw." at least they would have had a story to tell their family. lol.

Love it! I have a solid SOLID wood end table/office furniture/ SOMETHING that we can't quite figure out how to use. Right now it's a nightstand, but it's really too big for that. I really like the idea of making that into a seat.
But I had to laugh at your story ... why didn't you just flip the coffee table over, and "drop" the table onto the aligned holes? glad you didn't swallow the screw!!

That looks fantastic. I feel that with the legs out at an angle, and the handles (rails), it must have been a tray, maybe for breakfast in bed - lets face it, a lot of food could be served on one that size - breakfast for two maybe. Glad you didn't swallow that screw. I've had close calls with pins - too lazy to put them in a pin cushion.

I love going to Goodwill too and finding things to alter. You did a fab job on your bench. Btw, we had one of those coffee tables in the late 60's and those side rails created the "galley" on top of the table...went with the "captian's" chairs...I guess the decor was nautical! Lol!
