My First Sign...in Chevron: A Tutorial and Giveaway

I was visiting my sister in Chicago 2 weeks ago and she had an amazing piece of Subway art that I fell in love with because of the quote. I love subway art, but have no idea how to create it easily, so I went with Plan B.

I picked up a wooden plaque at Goodwill for $1.99. It wasn't new, but it had never been painted or stained. I used DecoArt Poodle Skirt Pink for the base. Then I used my zig zag/chevron painter's tape. What? You've not heard of patterned painters tape?? Well read on sistahs...I'm giving away a few rolls at the end of this entry!!

I wanted to use this tape on furniture...I was dying to do a chevron piece, but it's too small...it just doesn't look right. But for a sign, it was perfect. I did three rows of tape and painted DecoArt Slate Gray over everything. I love the way pink and gray shine together!

Next, I printed out the quote with Microsoft Word (I know...I'm fancy, huh?) in 130 font. I used a pen to trace the letters (over the paper) on the board. By applying a lot of pressure, it made indentations on the board enough for me to then trace with a paint pen.

Here it is...my favorite quote ever!

What a perfect motto for teen girls and women everywhere!

Ok, quickly...on to the giveaway. This patterned tape canNOT be found in stores or online. I found some at a yard sale last summer. I found out the name by searching google (Agapo Tape). I contacted the owner, who, although she doesn't do retail any more, she sent me a box of tape to give away! I'm going to pick four winners....one roll each! There's rick-rack, chevron/zig zag, faux bamboo and one more I can't remember. Please be a follower and leave a comment telling me you are AND what you'd use the tape for! Giveaway will end Tuesday, September 20th at noon! Good luck!
Thanks for stopping by!

This literaly brought tears to my eyes. I have two daughters and I just so want them to believe in that quote!! I have been following you for about 3 weeks now and I am in love with your work. So much that I thought I would try my hand at it on some things I have around the house that are in major need of a pick-me-up. This tape would certianly help in that process....but either way, I am totally inspired. Thank you for that!!---K. Metts

That's an awesome quote; it would be a great idea for my daughter's room. Also, I'm currently refinishing a small chest, or nightstand. I'm stuck as to what to do with it, taping it off in a decorative manner might be just what it needs.

I love the quote! I would love some tape to try out. I'm thinkin' of painting a drop cloth pillow to perk up my newly redone little porch rocker. I could do so much with it!

#1 The Sign looks fabulous! #2 I'd LOVE that tape! There are so many fabulous things you could do with it. I might make a sign as a knock off of your beautiful one, I might use it on this chair I'm rehabbing (depending on which take)...so many possibilities!

Patterned painter's tape?? I've never heard of such a thing! How awesome. Love how it turned out on your sign.

I would probably use it to paint a *small* piece of furniture (like a side table) or maybe make some sort of artwork.

Already a follower! :)

Hi I'm a new 'official' follower although I have you listed in my blog roll and have been visiting regularly for awhile. :)
Hmmm, so many options. I think I'd first use it on a burlap pillow (chevron) and then use the ricrac on a lampshade. The possibilities are endless.

Love the quote and the tape! I am a follower, and I am honestly not sure what I would do if I won a roll of that awesome stuff. I have two lamps that are screaming to be redone, I have lots of ideas for subway style signs I want to make, both of my boys need some fun stuff done in their rooms ... the possibilities are endless! Thank you for the opportunity I would love to win one and share what I did with it!

I love it! Just found your blog through Tip Junkie, and starting to follow. If I won tape, I would use it on the outside of a long skinny wood box I picked up at the thrift store that I'm turning into a jewelry box. That's an awesome yard sale find btw!
