This is a long, low console made of particle board. It's cute, no?? Great bones...just needed some updating. I usually pass by pieces like this because they aren't solid wood, but this one might change my mind! I went out and bought myself a brand spankin' new orbital sander. WHAT was I waiting for?? I am in love with it...it goes sooo much faster than using a sanding block. Duh, right? So I sanded this piece down, primed with Benjamin Moore Fresh Start high adhesion primer and then painted several coats of a creamy white. I glazed with ebony stain and now I think it looks so fresh and classy!
This turned out wonderful! It really gives me hope because I picked up this particle board filing cabinet the other day because it had a unique shape. I was getting worried but this made me feel a lot better!
It looks great, Allison! Thanks for mentioning the primer, I think I'm going to need that Gripper stuff when I go to redo a small dresser I found being trashed.
Oh, my tiny little hands, arms and shoulders feel for you! The little sander is the way to go! I love your finished piece and you did a wonderful job on it. Be a sweetie, Shelia ;)
I'm so happy you bought a sander!!! It's amazing you don't really think about it until you get a power tool. My next purchase is going to be a paint sprayer, I can't wait. This piece looks awesome, great job Allison!! :)
I have a particle board desk and bookshelf that need some prettying. I didn't know they would paint so well. Thank you for the tips and inspiration. Bookmarked I am so doing this. I am visiting from tip junkies linky party. Come say hi I love visitors. tyandwhitneyulrich.blogspot.com
Looks great, Allison! I am going to get one of those sanders for my bed project...that I *am* going to do...you know, one of these days. LOL Glad you like it!
I HATE particle board...just refurbed a table made of it and it did not want to work with me lol. I eventually got it finished, but it took some doin...urs looks great!!
Great Post! If you see the process of manufacturing particleboards, was developed to make use of wood processing waste. Planer shavings and sawmill slabwood, offcuts and sawdust are still used in some specific board types.
